What has been your biggest professional achievement?
Being in the business for 30 years there have been a few achievements. Our wholesale business has grown locally as well as out of state. We export to a variety of businesses in Bermuda. We have also built an addition to our facility to meet our increasing sales. My parents both immigrated here from the Azores. My mom came with her parents and siblings in 1966 and my father in 1970. They learned how to speak and read English on their own. Having a business running successfully for 30 years is a great achievement in its own. We have also created our own Web site, where out-of-state customers can order their favorite chourico and have it shipped right to their home. Also, having developed many great relationships and friendships with our customers and employees is a great achievement.
What’s the most fun you have had on the job?
We have had many great laughs here. We have been very fortunate to have had great employees through the years. One fun time we had was in 1996, when former President Bill Clinton came to visit Fall River. We had received a call from the mayor’s office if we would put together a gift basket of chourico as a present to President Clinton. It was a taste of Fall River. They also asked if we would make chourico sandwiches for the Secret Service and President Clinton to have when they arrived. My mom was very busy that Saturday morning making our famous chourico sandwiches. That was extremely exciting! How often to you make something for the President of the United States to munch on?
What’s the first thing you do when you get in in the morning?
Turn on my computer, take a sip of my coffee, and start calling my customers.
How do you define success?
Having a great product that is shown by customer loyalty for 30 years. Also having great relationships with your employees, customers and sales reps.
What advice would you give to another business owner?
Always have a positive attitude and build good relationships.
Where do you see your company in 10 years? 50?
Building a prosperous business where customers can continue to enjoy our great products.
How did you come up with a name for your business?
This was an existing business and we kept the name. Mello’s Chourico is well known throughout the country.
